Donald Haskell Stringer reported that he was a young man who strongly desired to fight for his country and saw himself as a patriot and a warrior. He enlisted a few years after Korea and received his discharge before the start of Vietnam.
He went through Basic in a Fort in California that no longer exists, and then he went to Fort Bragg for Jump School, and was stationed in Fort Campbell soon after.
He got into a dispute with his Sargent who was of Japanese descent over the fact that his boots were shined too brightly (simply more so than the Sargent’s) he was told to dye them a different color (cordon?) and then was brought up on insubordination charges after dyeing them cordon but only having black shoe polish to shine them.
For this altercation his rank was reduced to Private First Class, sometime after, when he got out of the service he found the Sargent and sought physical retribution, which he received, and said that he made the Sargent pay.
He like many young men of that time wanted to serve and see combat greatly, but just happened to be caught between the two wars. This is for the best, because if not, your humble author may not be scribing this for one to read.
